When we are talking about curd and Yogurt then how can we forget the most searched and important question is it the same???

Curd and Yogurt both things are different, Curd and Yogurt are often misperceive to be the same as they are two different types of dairy products. People often consider them the same and there is a myth that curd to India is like Yogurt to Western countries. This is true that both are made up of milk but the type of milk used in both the cases is different and so does the fermentation process in making them both.

Yogurt is made by the bacterial fermentation process and the bacteria that take part is known as “Yogurt Cultures” which directly causes fermentation of lactose present in milk and thereby producing lactic acid. This is due to the presence of this bacteria only, the taste of yogurt gets acidic.

Curd or Dahi is made by boiling and cooling the milk to 30-40c and adding a spoonful of curd. Now curd has Lactic Acid bacteria that are called “Lactobacillus”. This bacteria multiplies itself in the ambient temperature of 30-40c and few hours ferments the milk to form a curd. Curd is a rich source of calcium and protein and is good for lactose intolerant people (though it depends on the degree of tolerance of an individual towards lactose).

In India curd is regarded as an ingredient that is very good for stomach as it aids digestion and gives a cooling relief from spicy foods. But because curd and its bacterial strength vary from one home to the other hence it is not a standardized product. So the good bacteria present in curd may or may not reach the intestines alive to give the health benefits.

Yogurt is widely spread due to its health benefits over curd. Yogurt has less fat than curd (about 10% of the far curd has) and has more potassium, more sugar, and more calcium. Other benefits include a bigger dose of Vitamin B-12 and Magnesium.

On the other hand, Curd is also nutritious. It has amounts of vitamins K, E and A as well as amounts of potassium, fluoride, selenium, saturated fats, and copper. It has a slightly tangy flavor when compared to yogurt, but it is also a favorite for a lot of people.

Now onwards if anyone asks for the difference between curd and yogurt then kindly share this difference to your friends and family
